The Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA) establishes the federal framework for combatting human trafficking. It provides protections for trafficking victims, and funds much-needed services for victims and federal law enforcement efforts. The TVPA was passed in 2000, and strengthened and reauthorized every 5 years since.
However, if the TVPRA (Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act) is not passed this year, protections in place since 2000 will expire.
Four bills comprise the bi-partisan package that re-authorizes the TVPA, awaiting passage.
Two bills (HR 2200 and S.1862) fund services for victims outside the U.S. Two other bills, S.1311 and S.1312, fund services for victims here in the U.S. And it's these two bills that are being held up by Senators Schumer and Menendez.
Together, this bill package will strengthen and improve the United States’ response to both domestic and international human trafficking. We cannot let these efforts be divided—the entire package must be cleared together, or else the TVPRA risks expiration.
